A Private Lake

Lake Allegan is a 1,587 acre all recreations Lake that stays relatively quiet except for boaters accessing the lake for the summer Holidays. A major outdoor highlight bordering Lake Allegan is the Allegan State Game Area. Its 50,000 acres are situated primarily between the cities of Allegan and Fennville. The area is filled with trails for hiking, great places to fish and hunt along with snow shoeing and cross country skiing for your winter visit.

Lake Allegan was created as a reservoir via the Kalamazoo River which continues to flow thru Lake Allegan today. Most of the lake is overseen by Consumers Energy who uses the reservoir to produce electric power at a dam site where the lake water drops off into the continuing Kalamazoo Rivers as it winds its way into the Saugatuck harbor and eventually out to Lake Michigan.

Allegan’s dense forests and river geography once served as a source of water power, trade routes for steamboats, and timber production. Once cleared, Allegan became a center for business, industry and expansive farmland.
